Scope

CanCNSM Conferences are intended to provide an international forum for communicating recent and projected advances in various areas of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics and Materials, to bring together researchers working on common themes from complementary perspectives, and to provide an opportunity for direct information exchange among participants from academia, research laboratories, and industry. The framework of CanCNSM Conferences is truly multidisciplinary.

Scientists from all over the world are encouraged to participate in the Conference. All areas of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics as well as areas of Linear Solid Mechanics that are bridging nonlinear aspects are included. The aim of the Conference is to have a rich, exciting scientific program and an enjoyable social program.

Venue

Toronto, capital of the Province of Ontario, Canada, is a vibrant cosmopolitan city and also a cultural and financial centre. Located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes, Toronto is a city of many parks, clean and safe. The architecture is modern, dominated by glass-walled skyscrapers rising from lovely plazas.

Spend some time here in Toronto and enjoy the city and its unique ambiance, warmth and hospitality. Visit the CN Tower considered one of the tallest free-standing structures in the world. Marvel at Phillips Square with its graceful curved towers framing the domed amphitheatre of the Council Chamber and savor some moments at the Peace Garden, fountains, and reflecting pool. Experience the sights and sounds of some of the live theatre, musicals, and symphony at the Centre for the Performing Arts. Attend Distinguished Lectures at Massey Hall. Visit the Royal Ontario Museum that houses exquisite collections of Chinese art and is one of the richest natural history museums in North America. Browse through the art galleries and elegant shops on Yorkville Promenade that charms locals and visitors alike. Enjoy fine dining and music in a relaxed atmosphere at a cozy garden restaurant or at the 33rd floor with a spectacular view of the city.

Reminders of traditional Toronto are the Victorian-Romanesque Parliament Buildings. Majestic, overlooking the Queen’s Park, the buildings quietly cloak bustling Toronto with a light mantle of age and serenity.

Across from Queen’s Park, just steps away from the Parliament Buildings, is the University of Toronto, one of the finest Canadian research universities. Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto evolved into a leading edge graduate education and research institution. The University maintains unique laboratories and specialized aids to research that are made readily available for use by members of other universities. It acquired a library that is considered among the best in the world. The quality and the range of graduate and undergraduate programs attract students from across Canada and from abroad.

Transportation

Toronto is one of the most accessible cities of North America. Flights with major airlines can be booked through to Toronto Pearson International Airport. The airport and the Metropolitan Toronto area are served by an efficient public transit bus system and subway as well as by airport shuttles, taxi, limousines, and rent-a-car services. Alternatively, Toronto may be reached on land by car, by out-of-town Canada and US National Coach Lines, and by rail. VIA Rail Union Station, located right on Toronto subway line is within walking distance of the CN Tower, financial district, and many downtown hotels and restaurants. For the boat lovers who prefer to travel by boat whenever possible, Toronto offers docking facilities and complete harbor services in the heart of the city.

Social Program

The conference will feature a Welcome Reception, a City Tour followed by a Social Dinner and Music, and the Conference Banquet. After the conference, an excursion will be organized to Niagara Falls.

Languages

The official languages of CanCNSM 2008 are English and French and papers in both languages will be considered.

Submission of Papers

Original papers are invited on all aspects of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics and Materials. The submissions will be reviewed and the accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings Volumes available at the time of the conference. Suggested length for papers is 6 - 10 pages typed single space.
